The audience is America, as a nation, and its people, because Lincoln wishes to convince both sides of the slavery issue that there needs to be an agreement.

REASON
Lincoln's reason for writing this is to convince Americans that an agreement needs to made in order for the nation to stay strong & to develop. He also wants to question "where we are and whither we are tending" so that America can figure out what the next step to take is.

THE MAIN IDEA
The main idea of this writing is that America is divided and that the division is not healthy for the nation's power.

SIGNIFICANCE
It is important that Lincoln reminds American citizens of where they stand, so that hope can be aroused and changes can be made
